Freelance Broadcast Graphics Design
Humble Beginnings
On these pages are examples of my work as a full-time and freelance broadcast graphics designer, between the years 2000 to around 2005.
I did have a full career in television which began around 1983, but it concentrated in the technical side of things, with the occassional freelance gig in television production. It was interesting work, but there was something missing at the time: the creative element, which I craved. So, in 1998, I left the field to go back to school full-time, studying 3D computer animation, with the intention of getting out of television altogether. In 2000, I graduated with a degree in 3D computer animation from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and immediately got a job in...you guessed it...television. This time, I was doing broadcast graphics and finally found myself in my element.
Honing My Craft
I worked for a company called Mirage Video & Post, Inc., located in Pompano Beach, Florida. What was nice with this job, besides getting to work with some very nice and talented people, was the fact that I got the chance to do all the main broadcast graphics for all the television commercials, television shows, infomercials and other video projects the company did.
And, I got to do a lot!
Unfortunately, the dot-com bubble finally had an effect on my employment there (I was one of the lucky ones in my area to have survived the company axe...most people doing what I did, in the area I was living, lost their jobs earlier). While I didn't get a chance to salvage most of my work, I did save some of it, which is featured here.
Part of a Bigger Picture
A television production is rarely a solo endeavour and I do give credit to all the talented people involved in all the projects I worked on (too many to list here). All the work featured in this website are only the part of the workflow I was involved in. Further project development, such as editing and/or compositing, CG (in this case, text on screen, which I did later on in the workflow), music, talent keyed into the shot, etc. may be missing from the examples here. But, it is enough to demonstrate what I can do, especially as part of a team.
Since then, I have done some freelance broadcast graphics work. This has further elevated my talents which, combined with my other graphics skills and work in other areas, developed into a very creative and unique edge.
The Way I Work
Keep in mind that I don't currently have access to video recording or playback equipment. My work is all computer and internet based.
However, I have had great success in providing my finished projects in the form of numbered frames of animation, saved onto regular CDs, which an editor or compositor can easily drop into the timeline of almost any brand of editing or compositing solution. While some may see the lack of video recording equipment as a setback, the happy result for me is that I (and my clients) have saved a lot of money by using CDs only. In addition, the direct digital-to-timeline set-up proved to be a far superior quality solution to the tape-to-timeline one. Long-term storage is better, too.
Superior quality and cheaper...go figure.
I am also capable of providing finished work as most any digital format you require for use in any multimedia application ...including internet delivery.
I look forward to hearing from you, whether you are interested in my services, or you have any questions.
