3D Graphics
3D Graphics ... A La Carte Style
If it can be imagened, 3D graphics can create it. That is the wonderful thing about this medium...creating the possible out of the impossible. And, doing it within a remarkably doable budget.
For instance, I've used 3D graphics to create complete digital television sets and environments that talent interacts within. Imagine an architectural visualization used as a backdrop with talent performing in the front. Also imagine a set where you have, not just the backdrop, but the sides and front produced within one project and budget. Try different colors, elements, lighting, etc. and experiment to your hearts content.
Then, just by moving the digital camera around and taking different digital camera shots and saved as background graphics, you can have an almost endless number of backdrops. Talent is shot in front of a green screen and the digital set is chroma-keyed in. A super-simple concept that can be assembled in post production using any common editing or compositing solution. There are two examples of a set I've created for the show Power Play above. Read more about the project in the production notes below.
On this page are featured 3D graphics that were created as stand-alone objects throughout the years. Some were created for television shows, others for freelance video projects and print advertising. A couple of things were done just for fun and experimentation. Finally, there are more examples of related items in the visualization page.
Production Notes
Laundry 101 - No Place Like Home Television Show - I'm thinking I should probably have inserted this 3D animation within the Television Bumpers page because that is how this animation was used. Two bumpers in fact: the first 'lesson' ('Lesson 1:') and then the other one ('Lesson 2:') at a later time in the segment.
These animations were used within the television show for a segment on doing laundry. The show used many different 3D graphics elements during its run, from this blackboard on doing laundry to a spinning 3D food pyramid (not shown here) with different food levels being highlighted according to the script and much more.
Hour Glass - Various Television Commercials - A freelance project commissioned by an advertising production studio located in the South Florida area which caters to car dealerships and furniture retail stores. This element is an isolated graphic (no background and a see-through glass) and, while hard to see in this small-sized presentation, you can see the grains of sand bouncing in the lower half of the glass. This 3D graphic has appeared repeatedly in a large number of commercials throughout the country.
Medical Wand - Print, Trade Show and Web Advertisement - Freelance project used for advertising radio guided sentinel lymph node surgery. This image was part of a group of 3D elements, also featured in my visualization page, that found their way into print, a website and trade show marketing.
Robot Wagon - Unfinished Independent Project - Just for fun, I started this as a self-teaching exercise. I haven't finished it yet, I plan on making the mechanicals of the wagon a lot more complex. Not sure what environment it will exist in, or what it will do.
Snow Productions Logo - Print and Video - Video production house that is no longer in operation. Note: probably not affiliated with any company you may see as a result of a search on the internet. This logo, done as a 3D graphic, was used in print and in video end credits.
Ship - Power Play Television Show - This television show showcased new and upcoming video games. Every episode was rich in 3D graphics produced my me, then composited and edited later by others. In fact, most of the show's graphics were produced by myself: from the space ship you see here (intentionally made to look like a video game controller) to the virtual set and 'pod' I talk about below.
Voiceover on Video Tape Graphic - Inhouse Project During Fulltime Employment - There were times when it was more convenient to place a voiceover on video tape to use at a later time without any associated video footage. This 3D graphic was produced to place on the video, just to avoid seeing a black screen. Yes, unlike the sample here, the original had the reels turning as a simple animated loop.
Virtual Set - Power Play Television Show - As noted earlier, the next two samples are of the set used on the show Power Play. Completely created by me (the 3D graphics), it was built using 3D software, much like a 3D architectural visualization, then chroma-keyed behind talent who was recorded in front of a green screen. What made this technique so flexible was that, while building the set, I also built the sides and front of the space (what would have been behind the camera operator) so that the director has a huge variety of set choices. In fact, once built, it only takes a little bit of work to change colors and lighting, depending on production requirements. Need a different angle? A few clicks of the mouse moves the digital camera, render and save as a new background image.
The technique can also be used to layer 3D elements in front of talent, as is the case with the images featuring the host sitting at the desk. Please contact me if you would like to explore this option for your next production.
Pod - Power Play Television Show - Isolated 3D graphic element. This was the 'pod,' or the little space ship the host would use to shuttle himself from the space ship he traveled in (see ship, above) to earth. Editors/compositors would take this element and place it in the finished video. By the way, yes, that is a 'I Love Pong' bumper stick on the tail end of the pod.
National Shopping Club Logo - Print and Video - One of the shopping television shows produced by Mirage Video and Post in Pompono Beach, Florida. No longer in production.
Monitor - Power Play Television Show - Isolated 3D element. This monitor was composited in various places in the show. The graphic was isolated using an alpha channel (the black area). The green was used to chroma-kay material into.
And, Finally...
Unfortunately, the above samples are really only a small sampling of the many 3D graphics items I have been involved with. I have a reputation of having a great creative eye and the ability to produce work on time and on budget.
I would really love to be part of your next project. If I can be of service to you, please feel free to contact me.
